Using multiple visual art mediums, his work explores formal perceptions. Tapping on both abstraction and realism, his 2D and 3D imagery emphasizes potential abstraction and the possibility of architecture, where space is dynamic and stable, emerging and receding, yet unpredictable.
Cortes is an exhibiting artist with an extensive multidisciplinary career. His painting, installation, and sculpture work has been exhibited in different settings including John Davis Gallery, Hudson, NY; Manifest Gallery, Cincinnati, OH; Monterrey Museum, Monterrey, MX; Ruben Herrera Museum, Saltillo, MX; and MACO, Aguascalientes, MX. His sculpture work was recognized at the Silvermine Gallery AONE 19 as best in show. His installation work received a Special Honorable Mention at the II Monterrey Biennial, MX. Cortes has received numerous grants for art studies and production, and educational projects.
Cortes holds an MFA in painting from Hunter College, CUNY, and a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Coahuila University. In addition to his art practice, Cortes has been chief curator of several art galleries in NYC and Mexico. Has taught several workshops in painting and installation, and has led miscellaneous curatorial and educational programs. Born and raised in Mexico, he divides his practice between New York City and the Hudson Valley.
